Camtasia Digital Photo Story

Type of Lesson: Digital Storytelling

Lesson Plan Title –
Developing a Narrative in English using Hypermedia

Discipline and Topic –
English as a Second Language: Expressing language through hypermedia.

Target Population –

• Grade Level: 20 Korean Grade 1 High School students (American 10th grade)
• Population Characteristics: Homogenous population, ability levels vary greatly—class grouping is based on age not ability.
• Lesson Groupings: Students will work in pairs.

Curriculum Links –

This lesson…

• …is specifically designed to draw out students’ practical understanding and use of the English language.
• …will be conducted during the course of a “summer/winter camp” focused on English language conversation.
• …will be followed by a lesson focusing on the interpretation of onomatopoeic devices (EFL learners tend to describe sounds in ways that native English speakers would find very unusual).

Objectives –

Students will be able to….
• …analyze digital images for the purpose of developing an English speaking narrative.
• …create an English speaking narrative for the digital images they selected.
• …use Camtasia to create a photo story with audio, captions, transitions and titled cards.
• …recommend adjustments to be made to classmates’ projects in a kind yet critical manner.

Media Literacy Objectives –

Students will be able to…

• …routinely and efficiently use online information resources to meet needs for collaboration, research, publications, communications, and productivity.
• …select and apply technology tools for research, information analysis, problem-solving, and decision-making in content learning.

Materials and Timing –

• This lesson will take place over the course of a morning time slot (3 hours) for the second or third day of the summer/winter camp.
• Computer lab with projector connected to the teacher’s computer.
• Camtasia

Scope and Sequence –

1) Teacher will explain the objectives for the lesson in plain English.
2) Teacher will handout the directions for the activity.
3) Students and Teacher will review the directions together.
4) Students will begin working on their photo stories.
5) Teacher will assist as needed via messaging system or face to face interaction (students’ choice).
6) Students will present their photo stories to the class.
7) Students will vote on whose photo story was the best and critique one another’s work through teacher guidance and prompting.
8) Teacher will distribute a first, second and third prize gift for their achievements (gift certificate to school shop) and consolation prizes to the rest of the class, all of which is included in the camp budget.
9) Teacher will restate the lesson objectives in plain English.

Evaluation of Students –
Students will be evaluated based upon the rubric below:

Students will be able to analyze digital images for the purpose of developing an English speaking narrative. Student did not properly analyze the images. Student showed an adequate effort when analyzing the images. Evidence of their effort is apparent in their English speaking narrative
Student enthusiastically analyzed and applied their findings to their English speaking narrative.
Students will be able to create an English speaking narrative for the digital images they selected. Student did not create an English speaking narrative, or created a very weak English speaking narrative. Student adequately created an English speaking narrative that incorporated all of their chosen images.
Student creatively connected their chosen images through a thoughtful and engaging English speaking narrative.

Students will be able to use use Camtasia to create a photo story with audio, captions, transitions and titled cards.

Student did not use Camtasia or failed to complete a photo story.
Student adequately used Camtasia to create a narrated photo story that me the requirements. Student explored and experimented with the various features of Camtasia while creating a well put together photo story that went above and beyond the requirements.
Students will be able to recommend adjustments to be made to classmates’ projects in a kind yet critical manner.
Student did not participate in the evaluation process, or was rude to fellow classmates.
Student participated in the evaluation process at an acceptable level. Student was courteous to fellow classmates. Student energetically participated in the evaluation process. Student was encouraging and friendly when speaking to fellow classmates.

Students will be able to routinely and efficiently use online information resources to meet needs for collaboration, research, publications, communications, and productivity.
Student did not effectively use the internet and the messaging system during the lesson. Student was easily distracted from work.
Student used the internet and messaging system in an appropriate manner.
Student used the internet and the messaging system in a thoughtful manner. Student remained on task when using these media.

Students will be able to select and apply technology tools for research, information analysis, problem-solving, and decision-making in content learning.
Student did not use the technology tools available to them in an appropriate manner. Student used all technology tools in a manner to suggest that an effort was put forth. Student utilized all technology tools in a manner to suggest that they are, or are striving to become “technologically aware.” Student created a complex and highly developed end product.


Evaluation of the Lesson –

This lesson will be considered a success if students actively and enthusiastically engage with the material. The presentations should show effort and thoughtful deliberation. My aim is to get students expressing themselves in a more fluent manner by using digital media. This activity should illicit this response from the students.
